Reminder: Alberta Views 2017 Short Story Contest!

Just a friendly reminder that we are now accepting entries for the 2017 Alberta Views Short Story Contest! This contest is open to all current and former residents from Alberta. Interested writers have until June 30th to send us their unpublished short stories.

The basics are the same as last year:

  • The grand prize for the winning entry is $1,000 plus publication in an upcoming issue
  • Enter as many stories as you like; the fee for all entries is $30.
  • Each entry includes a one-year (10 issue) subscription to Alberta Views magazine

FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting announced The Dalton Camp Award in 2002 to honour the memory of Dalton Camp, a distinguished commentator on Canadian public affairs.

The Dalton Camp Award will go to the winner or winners of an essay competition on the link between democracy and the media in Canada. In 2016, there was one Award, open to all eligible entrants, consisting of a prize of $10,000, as well as a bronze cast medal by the late Canadian sculptress Dora de Pédèry-Hunt. In addition, a second Award consisting of a prize of $2,500 was awarded, at the Selection Committee's discretion, to the best essay by an entrant who is or was during the calendar year of the Award a student at a recognized post-secondary institution.

The Statistical Society of Canada’s Excellence in Data Journalism Award

The mission of this award is to promote excellence and creativity in the reporting of statistics-based findings to the Canadian public in an era when more and more reportage is being based on statistical analyses and interpretations. Data journalism on any subject involving statistics based findings and analyses is eligible for the award. The award is to be presented at the annual meeting of the Canadian Science Writers' Association.

We actively seek submissions from individual Canadian print, online and broadcast journalists and bloggers as well as journalism media outlets. Entries can have been published, broadcast or mounted online in English or in French and must have appeared in 2015.

The following criteria will bear equal weight in the evaluation of the submissions:

(1) Ease of understanding what the data is saying and the visual elegance and originality in how that data is conveyed.

(2) Impact of the entry on improving the public's understanding of the data and on its general contribution to increased statistical literacy amongst Canadians.

Best New Magazine Photographer - Last Call for Submissions

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for submissions to the National Magazine Awards is Friday, January 15. The award for Best New Magazine Photographer will go to an emerging Canadian photographer whose early work in magazines shows the highest degree of craft and promise.

Nominate yourself or a young photographer you’ve worked with. The cost to enter is only $25.

Deadline to enter the David Carr Prize for Emerging Writers at SXSW is end of the day on Friday, January 29. Original and unpublished entries will be reviewed by a selection committee. The author of the winning essay will be honored at the SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards during on Tuesday evening, March 15, 2016. Top essays from this competition will be published on the SXSW website.
